I recently sat down with a 24-year-old ultra endurance runner named Pierce Showe.
He holds a Guinness World Record for running 153 half-marathons in 153 straight days.
On a treadmill.
But here’s what stuck with me most:
Three times, Pierce completed all 13.1 miles… and it didn’t count.
A camera glitched, his phone died; one small detail was off.
It was 11 pm. He was mentally and physically drained.
No one would’ve blamed him for stopping.
After all, 99 days in a row is still pretty impressive.
But that wasn’t the goal.
So he ran it again.
“Pierce, why would you even attempt something like this?”
He didn’t flinch.
“Growing up I wasn’t a runner; I struggled to finish a 5K in high school.
But I wanted to set a goal that would force me to become the kind of man who could do something that once felt impossible.”
There were so many takeaways from my interview with him around leadership, world-class performance, commitment, and resilience.
Here are 3 of the most powerful lessons I took from our conversation every high-achieving entrepreneur needs to hear:
- Recommit Every Day
Pierce didn’t make one big commitment, he made 153 small ones.
Drifting as a spouse, parent, or leader doesn’t happen overnight; it happens through tiny compromises that slowly shape us into someone we didn’t intend to be.
World-class performers don’t just commit to outcomes; they commit to the process.
- Doing what’s right, following through even when you don’t feel like it
- Sticking to blocks of time for work ON the business even when you feel like there are 100 other pressing things you “need” to get done
- Choosing to let go of work mentally when you’re at home, even when things feel out of control in the business
Reflection:
- What decision (personally or professionally) do I need to recommit to today?
- Build Around What Matters Most
His schedule was built on three priorities: God, his wife, then running.
That meant “no” to late nights, to travel, and to anything that pulled him away from what mattered.
As entrepreneurs, we have a terrible habit of sacrificing everything on the altar for a goal we’re chasing. Pierce got clear on what his priorities were beyond JUST the goal and aligned everything to them.
You say you want peace, freedom, and impact.
But your calendar says: chaos, reactivity, and noise.
What might this mean for you?
- Blocking family time or spiritual rhythms vs. heading straight to your phone.
- Saying no to a new lucrative opportunity that you know will add more stress.
- Designing your week for focus, not just output.
Reflection:
- Do what I SAY are my priorities show up on my calendar? If not, what needs to be cut or delegated for real alignment?
Don’t Settle for “Close Enough”
99 days was enough to impress people.
But Pierce wasn’t doing it for them.
He knew compromise here would make it easier to compromise elsewhere.
Integrity is what we do when no one else is watching.
ARE YOU…
- Showing up halfway at home and telling yourself “They’ll understand?”
- Avoiding a decision because it’s uncomfortable?
Reflection:
- Where am I justifying something, I wouldn’t accept from others?
Pierce accomplished something no one in history ever has.
But he didn’t wake up one morning and suddenly he was the type of man who could run 153 half-marathons in a row.
He did it one step at a time.
Don’t focus on your 153-half-marathon goal…focus on ONE step you can take today to better align with the person God is seeking for you to become in Christ.
Then take that step.
